The most famous climb In the Shawangunk Mountains is High Exposure, first led in 1941 by Hans Kraus, wearing sneakers, no harness, and tied into a hemp rope about as dependable as laundry line.

Even today, at 5.6, it evokes fear, excitement and anticipation. But it was only one of many amazing Hans Kraus climbs. And few knew that Hans’ life off the cliffs was equally amazing —national headline news in the 1950s, compared to the greatest scientists of the century, leaving a mark on history as JFK’s secret doctor.

Susan, who knew Hans well, has an amazing collection of historical climbing photos to accompany her stories about a man whose  life could have been a Hollywood movie. Prepare to be surprised, awed, and inspired.
